Like Acupuncture, Reflexology, Shiatsu, Kinesiology and many other well known complementary techniques, EFT is a Meridian therapy. This means that it works by stimulating the 14 Meridians, or energy pathways of the body that have been known to Chinese medicine for thousands of years.

The technique involves tapping on various Meridian points whilst focusing on an emotional issue. As the layers of the problem are worked through, this gently removes disruptions in the body's energy system, restoring a normal energy flow, which clears the problem at its source.

Emotions that have been locked in the body, sometimes for years can be released easily and permanently, without discomfort and even the most traumatic of memories can be healed safely and effectively.

The Emotional Freedom Technique can be highly effective for a wide range of problems including:

  • Fears and Phobias
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Grief
  • Addictions including smoking
  • Weight loss

It can also be used for physical symptoms by treating the emotional cause.

The process works a bit like peeling an onion. We start by taking a reading on a scale of one to ten on how the emotion or symptom feels. You may notice it in your body as a sensation, such as anxiety in the chest or stomach. If the memory is particularly painful we will start by taking a reading on how it feels to think about working on this, so that we reduce the intensity around the issue until you feel safe to think about it directly.

You will then tap the series of points in turn whilst focusing on the issue and noting any thoughts that come into your mind. As the issue starts to clear, different aspects of the problem may come to mind, which provides direction for the next rounds of tapping.

For example, with a fear of spiders, we may start by focusing on the feeling you have when you think about spiders. You will describe the image that comes to mind when you think about them and there will be a number of things about spiders that cause you anxiety. For example it may be the way a spider moves, the thought of them touching you, the way they look etc. Each of these aspects will be tapped out in turn until in isolation that particular part no longer scares you.

As we are tapping, a new aspect may come to light or a memory – such as an incident in childhood where you had a run in with a huge monster spider! If so, these will then be tapped away.

The session will close down the fears, one by one until you no longer feel any anxiety when thinking about spiders. You will then be asked to try to find something in your mind that still makes you feel afraid. Once nothing more can be found, the work is complete.

Fears and phobias and smoking cessation are usually treated within one session, where I use a combination of EFT and hypnotherapy. For emotional issues. Trauma, depression, anxiety and weight loss you are likely to require more than one treatment. But at the end of each session, you will always be left feeling peaceful and calm. In this way it differs from counselling, where emotions are often stirred up during the process, which can leave you feeling raw or sensitive when you leave.
